Several times over the last few weeks I’ve heard John Legend’s popular song, “All of Me“. Interestingly, each time I’ve heard it, I have listened to the words that I’m pretty sure are meant to be 100% secular, yet, I’ve considered them from a spiritual and even Godly perspective. (I wonder just how many songs we could do the same exercise with?)
A portion of the lyrics say-
‘Cause all of me, Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me, I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning, Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all, all of me, And you give me all, all of you
I especially like the statement about all ‘my’ perfect imperfections, don’t you? That is an awesome reminder of the concept I shared with you in several other posts of late. How God sees us differently than we see ourselves. Even all the parts that we believe are not worthy of God’s love and grace.
Have you ever really considered that God wants ALL of you? And what does that really mean?
In Romans 6:13 we find:
Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin.
Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life.
So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. (NLT)
I found a list of questions that are designed to assist us in a more practical sense to determine if we are giving ourselves totally to God:
-
How do I spend my time?
-
How much time do I spend serving God and others versus serving myself?
-
How much time do I spend with God?
-
How do I spend my energy?
-
Do I expend more energy on sporting events, shopping, working, or enjoying hobbies than I do in worship?
-
Where do my affections lie?
-
Is God number one in my heart?
-
How do I spend my money?
-
Am I honoring God with my money?
-
How much am I investing in God’s kingdom?
-
Where do I place my allegiance?
-
Does God receive my highest allegiance?
-
To what or whom am I most dedicated, committed, and loyal?^
Much of what we spend our time, energy, loyalty and money on are gifts from God. It is perfectly acceptable to enjoy those gifts as long as they are not taking precedent over the One who gave them to us. If at the end of the day, or even as we look much farther out in to our life journey, what do we see? We will likely see just what we have invested our life in. Will it be God or something/someone else?
I’ve mentioned before how much I enjoy searching out and finding new Christian music to share with you and I’ve been blessed to find another great song to share. I had not heard it before today, so if you have, where have you been hiding it? It is a wonderful version of a song with the same name “All of Me” by Doug Williams. The lyrics say… take my mind, soul, life – please take control – take my heart, body – here I am, make me whole. What a wonderful prayer for us all.
Take All of Me!
